Whats the state of play on soundcards these days? On-board Realtek sound good enough for 99% of gaming and MP3 needs or is it worth buying a cheap soundblaster to ease the load?

I really need a new pc. I'm out of the loop when it comes to the technology race. I'm not after a cutting edge machine I just want the best I can get for about £500 maybe max £600. Don't want new speakers or monitor, just the CPU, GPU, soundcard, ram, HD, DVD-RW multi format.
Someone please tell me what I should be looking at!
  • CPU model/speed?
  • Graphics card
  • sound card
  • HD type
  • RAM size/speed?
Uses: Photoshop, 3ds, MP3's, gaming, internet, email, that's it.
Cheers

side door panel for number: looks better if it doesn't overlap the line of the door hinge.
The right side of front skirt, live for speed logo, the d is being cut off, needs resizing or moving back a couple of px.

I think you are spot on, Blackout, not many people really have a 'feel' for the scales involved, both in physical dimensions and of timescales. We are but a tiny pimple in the history of this planet, the blinking of an irrelevant eyelid. Not that this can condone complacency in any way on our part, it's just that very few environmental activists seem able to have a true sense of scale or context. It's all emotive soundbites and mostly scientific ignorance.

I was a lot more convinced by the C4 film "The great global warming swindle" that addressed issues logically in a way that confirmed my own feelings, most save-the-earth rantings about co2 and global warming have only limited understanding of geological timescales. Yet only 60 years ago the co2 levels in the atmosphere were far higher than now, during this period there was a steady gentle drop int he earths average temperature, which went on for 4 decades.
What we are now seeing is a small pimple on the overall trends which is entirely negligible in the big scheme of things. Go offset your carbon and take abike to work while the US, India and China belch incredible amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere largely unchecked. If that helps you go to bed with a clear conscience at night then fine.
The whole Global warming scam is big business and run by political activists and not logical scientists.

The install and updates went amazingly well, it's all running really sweet now, but so many tracks and add-ons its bewildering. Great to be back in the ol' game again. I really cannot stress enough if any LFS fans out there have not had an hour of so at the wheel of GPL it reaslly is a great experience, but be gentle and patient as it bites back hard.

I would really recommend anyone interested in sim racing (I guess that's everyone here) to at least download the GPL 2004 demo and have a go with the 1965 mod which is a lot more user-friendly; lighter cars, more nimble and less powered than the full '67 beasts.
It still remains the definitive racing game for me, I've been playing it on and off for more years than any other game, inc. MS flightsim.

Quote from axus :I'll come over to your house, beat the shit out of you, then kill you in front of your relatives, and molest any female relatives you may have. But that's my choice. Is that OK?

And if you argue that I'm damaging other people's lives while they are not, what about their children? Having children when you know they will have something wrong with them is child abuse as far as I'm concerned.

Well there's a clear balanced argument....not!
It's this sort of post that turns a discussion into a rant.
I'm not supporting these people but there's no guarantee that their offspring will be abnormal, there's an increased likelihood, which is why nature does not recommend this activity, and why your argument and strange reasoning is so flawed.

There's other stuff went on we're not going to discuss here, believe me one funny post every three months is nowhere near compensation for the hassle caused and the people insulted.

no, you are right ben, i'm just feeling tired and nostalgic, I have never actually known about those extra lfs world stats facilities. GPL rank seemed very straightforward to me at the time but i now have a son who works the vcr or me asnd i guess its time to take a back seat on technology

GPL-like benchmark laptimes

Remember GPL? They kept hotlapping and WR's alive by having a site where your best laptimes for the different tracks were compared, for each of the 7 car types, against what was considered the 'pro-standard'. The aim was to get within about 7% of the pro-time on each car for each circuit. Your score was a combination of your accumulated laptimes for each car and track. This was then put into a table with a load of other players who participated in the handicap system. The goal was to get down to zero or negative overall, which was, for me, very tough. GPL was never so easy and active as LFS for online racing so this offline league played more of a strong role in the community and it worked well. You could download benchmark laps and WR laps to see how the aliens did it. Someone devised a clever spreadsheet where you entered your best laptimes for each track and car then it would show you which car you needed to 'learn' better and which track you were slowest on overall to have the best chance of improving your overall handicap.
For me, it was a great idea, personal targets to try to get within 7% of the pros, then 5% and 3%, at least on a couple of my preferred car types.
Maybe the LFS community has the space for a similar system, we should get the devs to lay down their laptime benchmarks for all the tracks and car combinations and complement the online race leagues with a bit of offline skill development.

erm, what has that got to do with anything here? This thread is for UF skins, not your personal insights into other people's skins for other cars.
